Perplexus Rebel

A great beginner ball maze with seventy numbered obstacles that has given us years of fun... and still does.

Recommended

Is the Perplexus Rebel worth it as a first marble maze for kids ages six and up?

Clear recommendation for the Perplexus Rebel from Spin Master, because with its 70 obstacles kids get far quickly and still stay challenged for a long time. The Rebel model is seen as the entry point before the Beast and Epic, and at our house it has been played with again and again for almost six years. The manufacturer cites EN 71 testing only in general terms for all products, and “Dad's Life” found no defects in its long-term test, which I can confirm.

The analysis

The Perplexus Rebel is a 3D ball maze: a transparent plastic sphere with a track inside it that has 70 numbered obstacles. You hold it in both hands and tilt, turn and angle it until the small metal ball rolls over stairs, through a tube and past an igloo to the finish. If it falls off, it goes back to the start. In the “Eltern Aktuell” video, an eight-year-old and a five-year-old play with it, and even the younger one gets a good way along the course. At our house my daughter had the ball maze at five, and when guests come over, we still compete to see who gets further or finishes the track faster. Two videos, including one from “Peace of Mind Reviews”, also mention it as something to do on long car rides, even if the shaking of the car makes it harder. I think that's pretty cool though, it raises the difficulty.

Pros

  • Beginners get far quickly, because the track walls are a bit higher than on other spheres. At our home it gave a sense of success at five years old, and “mullematsch” describes the same for the first attempt.
  • Stays in play for years. At our home the sphere still gets taken out after almost six years, and adults play with it too.
  • Survives falls. In the long-term test by “Dad's Life”, the sphere fell to the floor and kept no marks.
  • A single piece without batteries, which two test videos explicitly recommend as something to do on long car rides.

Cons

  • The ball now and then sticks between the track and the outer wall. “Dad's Life” and we at home free it with light taps on the housing.
  • Without a restart point, every fall means back to the start. The bigger Beast has two restart points, and with the Rebel this causes frustration.
  • Rather short for practiced players. I advise experienced players to go straight for the Beast with 100 obstacles.

Educational value

  • Fine motor skills
  • Coordination
  • Spatial thinking
  • Concentration
  • Patience and perseverance

What a child practices with the Perplexus Rebel follows directly from active play. They have to watch where the ball rolls and match their hands to it precisely. The family in the “Eltern Aktuell” video names hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and spatial thinking, because the track winds around the ball in three dimensions. Add to that concentration over several minutes at a stretch. Just as visible is how a child deals with setbacks: if you get angry, you shake it and lose the ball, and after every fall you start again from the beginning. At our house that already worked at five. “mullematsch” advises trying the first obstacles together, showing the child how slowly the ball can be moved by tilting carefully, and celebrating every section they manage.

How long will it last you?

Usable life: approx. 6 years

At our house it started at five years old, and in the “Eltern Aktuell” video a five-year-old also gets far. Between six and eight, kids manage their first complete runs and then compete on time. Later the Rebel becomes a game for guests and adults, and anyone who wants more simply moves up to the Beast or Epic. On the age recommendation the sources contradict each other: “Amazon” and “Thalia” say from six, “Dad's Life” and “Eltern Aktuell” say from eight, though in both tests it is played by younger kids. The ball has been in our house for almost six years and holds up reasonably well, and in the long-term test it survived a fall without any marks. “Amazon” states that EU spare parts are available for two years, but no source says which parts those are supposed to be. Since the ball isn't designed to be opened either, I imagine that's pointless anyway. According to “Dad's Life”, the Rebel is often passed on, which I can easily imagine myself.

Safety

No source names a test mark for this exact model. The manufacturer only states in general in its sustainability report that its products meet EN 71. The ball is inside a closed housing, but the shops still warn of a swallowable small part and don't approve the game for children under three.

Production and distribution

My own research, as of 07/11/2026. Details may have changed since.

Location
China

The Perplexus is developed by Spin Master, a toy company based in Toronto. “Amazon” gives China as the country of origin, and the long-term test also names manufacturing in China. According to the manufacturer's sustainability report, Spin Master now has everything produced at third-party factories in 15 countries and moved part of its production from China to Vietnam in 2025. No source says whether this affects the Rebel. As an address in the EU, “Thalia” lists Spin Master International B.V. in Amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions

How long does one run take with the Perplexus Rebel?

About five to ten minutes once you already know the track well. That's what the family in the “Eltern Aktuell” video says, whose children play at five and eight years old. Until your child manages the 70 obstacles in one go for the first time, it usually takes many attempts, because every fall means starting over from the beginning.

Can two people play the Perplexus Rebel?

Yes, taking turns. In the “Dad's Life” test it was played again and again by two people in turns. At our house it turns into a little contest when guests are over, to see who gets further or finishes the whole track faster.

Does the Perplexus Rebel need batteries?

No. It works purely mechanically by tilting and turning. It also doesn't need to be assembled and is ready to play right after unpacking.

Is the Perplexus Rebel the same as the Perplexus Rookie?

Yes, at its core. According to “Thalia”, the Rebel is the new version of the Rookie with new packaging design, and “mullematsch” also lists it as the former Rookie. If you already have a Rookie, the Rebel doesn't bring a new course.

What is in the box with the Perplexus Rebel?

The maze sphere and an instruction sheet, nothing more. None of the sources mentions a stand for the Rebel.
