miniLÜK control unit with clear panel
After twelve tasks, your child flips the box over and sees from the color pattern whether everything is right.
From what age is the miniLÜK control unit from Westermann worth it?
Clear recommendation for the miniLÜK control unit from Westermann. Children from about four years old can practise on their own with it, and they get small moments of success because they see right away whether they were right or not. Big plus: "Made in Germany". This assessment is based on my own experience, two explainer videos and several parent forums. On safety, Westermann cites spot-check testing to EN 71 for the LÜK control units in a declaration of conformity, but only the bambinoLÜK is listed there.
The analysis
The miniLÜK control unit is a flat plastic box with a transparent hinged lid and twelve numbered tiles, intended according to the manufacturer for children aged four to eleven. On its own it does nothing. It is the tool for the miniLÜK practice workbooks. An explainer video on the “Vera” channel shows what that looks like. The child sorts the tiles into the lid, takes tile one, looks at an Osterei (Easter egg) in the workbook and asks whether the word has an O in it. Yes, so the tile goes onto the field under the smiling smiley. After that it is about syllables: Brot has one arc, Krokodil three. At the end the box is closed, turned over and opened, and the backs of the tiles form a color pattern that has to match the template in the workbook. A second video from the daycare of “PropsteiLebenstedt” plays through the same thing with a workbook about the mouse and numbers up to twelve.\n\nThe device becomes clearest in the comparison by “Betzold” with the large LÜK box. That one has 24 tiles and more text-heavy workbooks, and it targets older primary school children, while the miniLÜK tiles are twice as thick and easier to grip. The two systems are not compatible. In the “Lehrerforen”, some teachers prefer Logico because it is easier to understand, can be interrupted, and doesn't send twelve tiles onto the floor. A special-needs teacher counters that her children like the LÜK precisely when clothespin cards and Logico get monotonous. Below it, the bambinoLÜK with six tiles marks the lower limit. A mother on “urbia” found it already too easy for her almost four-year-old.\n\nLearning happens through the game, but at its core the game is placing and revealing. Each red task number corresponds to one tile, each black solution number to one field. If the pattern doesn't match, the child turns over the wrong tiles, closes the box again and sees which tasks to tackle once more. At our house, exactly this moment was the high point, and my daughter beamed every time the pattern matched. Even so, it doesn't work entirely without adults at first. Teachers report that children without practice in self-checking cheat or give up early, and a mother on “Rabeneltern” had to sit next to her child the whole time. In the review by “spieletest.at”, the workbook Mathestation 1 stands out for so many intermediate steps between the calculation, the color table and the field that it overwhelms some children.\n\nOn age, manufacturer and parents are close together. Westermann gives four to eleven years and workbooks up to the end of fourth grade. Several parents say their children understood the principle at just under four, while another four-year-old still lacked the stamina. One teacher observes that many first graders lack the concentration for twelve tiles until Easter. So I would base the start on your child's stamina, not on the birthday. You buy the workbooks individually, there are over 250 according to the manufacturer, and several parents borrow them from the library. If you are digging an old box out of the attic, you should know that, according to a forum post, units with insert sheets don't fit today's workbooks.\n\nIn everyday use the box is handy and, at 26 by 13 centimeters, fits in a backpack. The twelve loose tiles are the weak point, and teachers advise practicing the tidying up right away so the next child can start immediately. Not every child likes the principle. One found it annoying, according to his mother, not to be allowed to simply write down the solutions. A family I know used the device for three daughters, one with more enthusiasm, another with less.
Pros
- Your child checks themselves, because after closing and turning over, the color pattern of the tiles shows whether all twelve tasks are right and which are not.
- One unit for over 250 topic workbooks according to the manufacturer, from preschool workbooks on sounds and syllables to math and reading in fourth grade.
- Very durable. In parent forums, boxes from the 1980s and early 1990s are still in use, and at our house the unit was passed on.
- The tiles are reportedly twice as thick as on the large LÜK and therefore easier for preschoolers to grip.
Cons
- The self-checking can be bypassed. Teachers in the “Lehrerforen” report that unpracticed children cheat or give up early.
- Twelve loose tiles fall easily. One teacher sees with first graders that everything often ends up on the floor.
- Without separately bought workbooks the box stays empty, and a single workbook gets boring after a few rounds.
- Some workbooks are fiddly. “spieletest.at” criticizes Mathestation 1 for so many intermediate steps to the right field that some children are overwhelmed.
Educational value
- Fine motor skills
- Concentration
- Numbers and quantities
- Language
- Reading and writing
What a child practices is determined by the workbook, not the box. In the video with the O workbook, a preschooler trains hearing sounds in words and clapping syllables. According to the sources, other workbooks cover arithmetic in the number range up to 12 or 20 and first reading with comprehension. The routine stays the same: sticking with twelve tasks in a row, matching numbers and placing small tiles deliberately, which demands concentration and fine motor skills. Through the pattern, the child finds their own mistakes and corrects them. Teachers stress that the box does not teach content but only practices it, and that children often internalize the principle only over weeks. That it specifically promotes thinking and logical understanding is only said by the manufacturer. Whether a child can do what they practiced without the box afterwards has not been tested by any source.
How long will it last you?
Before the miniLÜK, for two- to three-year-olds, comes the bambinoLÜK with six tiles. At about four, most children in the forum reports begin with preschool workbooks on pictures, sounds and quantities. In first and second grade, arithmetic and reading workbooks follow. Teachers use the device mainly there and in third-grade remedial lessons, and according to the manufacturer workbooks exist up to fourth grade. After that it continues with the large LÜK box, which has 24 tiles and needs its own workbooks. A single workbook is exhausted after a few rounds, and at our house it then got boring, but new workbooks keep the box in play. The box itself lasts a long time. We passed it on, and in forums, units from the 1980s and early 1990s are still in use. No source says whether Westermann sells individual tiles or lids as spare parts. Used workbooks are available cheaply on platforms like “Willhaben” or to borrow at the library.
Safety
In a declaration of conformity from 2021, Westermann states that the plastic control units of the LÜK range have been sample-tested to EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3, but only the bambinoLÜK unit is named there. No source contains an independent safety test of the miniLÜK control unit.
Production and distribution
- Location
- Germany
The manufacturer is Westermann Lernwelten GmbH in Braunschweig. The country of production itself is Germany (DE), a big plus these days. After that, however, the public trail goes cold. I couldn't quickly find out which plastic injection molder is responsible for manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need extra workbooks for the miniLÜK?
Yes. According to the manufacturer, the box contains only the unit with clear lid and the twelve tiles, and the tasks are in the practice workbooks. According to Westermann, there are over 250 of them on math, reading, language and concentration.
Can you borrow miniLÜK workbooks from the library?
Often, yes. In several parent forums, parents say their library lends workbooks and sometimes boxes too, and that they are in demand there. According to forum posts, the workbooks are also available cheaply used.
Do the workbooks from the large LÜK box work with the miniLÜK?
No. According to “Betzold”, the two systems are not compatible, because miniLÜK workbooks only work with the unit with 12 tiles and LÜK workbooks only with the box with 24 tiles.
Does my old miniLÜK box from back then fit the new workbooks?
Probably not. In one forum, a mother writes that the old boxes worked with insert sheets, while today's workbooks are slid under the transparent lid. For current workbooks you therefore need the unit with clear lid.
Does the miniLÜK fit in a school bag?
Yes. Closed, the box measures 26 by 13 centimeters according to the manufacturer
